Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I install my own software?
A: Managed Networks is happy to host your business applications. These will be discussed on an individual basis. You cannot install software yourself onto the DesktopLive platform.

Q: Can I use computers I already own?
A: The vast majority of DesktopLive use the computers they already owned before using our hosted desktop service. DesktopLive can actually extend the working life of your computer as it is actually doing very little when connected to our service. Your own computer connects to the service using the PPP VPN facility within Windows XP when you are not in your office.

Q: What about email on the move?
A: DesktopLive uses Microsoft Exchange 2003 to provide your e-mail service. If your mobile e-mail device can integrate with Exchange 2003, you will be able to get your e-mails on the move.

Q: What if my broadband connection goes down?
A: If your broadband connection fails, you will temporarily be unable to use DesktopLive. You will be able to continue working on your desktop or laptop if you have the required software on the machine. Any work undertaken whilst offline can be uploaded once your broadband connection is restored. Managed Networks recommends you use a business broadband provider, such as Easynet, for your office connection(s). Home users should use an ISP that supports VPN connections.

Q: How long is the standard contract?
A: Standard contracts are currently for three years

Q: How long does it take to get DesktopLive up and running?
A: Your DesktopLive account can be live within a couple of days. If you already have your broadband connection, the most time-consuming aspect is the re-direction of your e-mails. This generally takes up to 48 hours.

Q: Why use Managed Networks DesktopLive instead of a larger company?
A: Managed Networks DesktopLive service is a corporate-grade service with SME prices.
A: DesktopLive is flexible across the space allocated to a client. If one user is using more space than allocated, but another is using less, there will not be an additional charge.
